Let’s look at this entirely as a love story that requires us to suspend our disbelief. Forget that the towns seem to be populated only by dons, henchmen and spouses, but someone contrives to bring out a local newspaper called Ranjhar Times. Forget that people kill each other all the time, and get away without the press ever finding out, and the authorities ever following up. This is one of two warring villages in Gujarat, where policemen who have been bribed to raid one clan by the other can be bribed to stop the raid with pornographic film DVDs. Ram Leela opens to a man speaking on his mobile phone, and telling someone that he has walked into a town where guns are sold in an open market. The reason the film leaves us cold is that, in the middle of all the posturing and the pirouetting, Bhansali forgets to supply the audience with a story. And a smorgasbord of sounds and colours that wage regular assaults on our senses was only to be expected from a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Melodrama, though, was only to be expected from Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (as the film was renamed after protests from Hindutva groups against its original title Ram Leela). On the heels of Issaq and Ishaqzaade comes a film that could make Shakespeare wrinkle his nose and say, “Okay, so this is a tad melodramatic”.
